This series showcases beauty beyond the city, what makes it come alive, and the little things within that make it ours. Having only been in Richmond for five months now, I’ve found it difficult to be drawn to a certain subject within photography. This photo project is the first time I’ve shot film in six months. Being in the city has made me more hyperaware of my surroundings. I wanted to use my awareness of everything that happens in the city in this project. I grew up in the southern part of Virginia, and was used to shooting nature and going on hiking trips for photography. I always had that familiar feeling of being aware in the woods. It took me a while, but I was able to find that awareness here. I wanted there to be a “compare and contrast” to the photos, showing major differences but similarity through the frames and composition. Each photo has a sequence going back and forth between nature and the city. I still find it hard for me to shoot things here because of how accustomed I am to shooting in nature. I tried to use the same type of framing that I would usually shoot when shooting on a camping trip or nature trail whenever I would go on trips with friends. I wanted that to be a subtle similarity with these photographs.
