Weekly Roundup: Sudoku, Japanese Sound Rock and Scott Pilgrim

What our staff has been looking at, thinking about, listening to, etc…

Andrew:

I know what you’re thinking; “Scott Pilgrim is for losers.” But trust me, the new Netflix anime is a hilarious animation masterwork that remixes everything that made the original comic a bit… dicey. Amid the holiday season, “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is exactly what America needed.

Monisha:

Whilst waiting in line at the CVS I read an article in “The Atlantic” that was a perfect blend of hilarious and true called “Has Anyone Noticed That Trump Is Really Old?” Had me remember that while Biden is slightly older than Trump, Trump is also really old and we only forget that cause he’s also nuts.

Mason:

Earlier this year Lil Yachty put out a psychedelic rock record called “Let’s Start Here.” That record was kinda trash, so if you want an actually good psychedelic rock record from this year check out “CITTA ‘ ‘ 93,” a live record by Japanese noise rock legends Les Rallizes Dénudés. Plus, then you get to say you know Les Rallizes Dénudés, which is basically music nerd catnip.

Lareina:

For the last month and a half I’ve been getting really into sudoku. I play using an app on my phone, because I’m too much of an iPad baby to use real paper. Sometimes I catch myself dreaming about numbers in little tiny boxes.

Isaiah:

“Unlimited Ammo,” the 2021 album by Namasenda has been on repeat for me. This album explores action movie and video game sounds and themes to make futuristic pop music. The sonic palette is crisp, bold, and explosive, and Namasenda lyrically explores setting boundaries and standing her ground in a way that’s larger than life.

Kobi:

“Endless” by Frank Ocean. Seriously. Go listen if you haven’t. It’s on SoundCloud because he never officially dropped it. However, the visuals and sonic of this album is pristine in atmospheric soundscapes and melodramatic but abstract lyrics.
